African American Women
"A Century of Tradition...A Tradition of Excellence."
The month of March was Women’s History Month. As young, college-educated women, the women of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. recognize the importance of celebrating the accomplishments of women that come from all different backgrounds. We feel it is especially important to uplift and recognize African American women for historically overcoming so many boundaries and obstacles to become successful surgeons, politicians, teachers, lawyers, mothers, and almost any occupation you can think of.
The public celebration of women's history began in 1978 as "Women's History Week" in Sonoma County, California. In 1987, Congress expanded the celebration to a month, and March was declared Women’s History Month.
Two significant factors contributed to the emergence of women's history. The women's movement of the sixties caused women to question their invisibility in traditional American history texts. The movement also raised the aspirations as well as the opportunities of women, and produced a growing number of female historians.
Let’s recognize and celebrate the diverse and historic accomplishments of women, especially African American women, who come from all backgrounds and continue to break barriers and fulfill their personal and professional potential.
In honor of African American women, the Zeta Pi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. created a slideshow presentation about women who made a difference in US society and a Poem about the women of the Chapter. Please take the time to learn about the history and legacies left by these amazing, upstanding women; a legacy of tradition and excellence.

I Am
I am.
I am.
Unafraid,
Undeterred,
Conscious,
Revived.
Unpredictable
Invincible
Passionate
Alive.
I am black women
I am brilliant, resilient.
Traveled
Intelligent
Ambitious,
Adventurous
Persistence with
Diligence
I am the strength of my people.
The life of the Nile-
Africa’s daughter, sister, and long lost child.
I am the truth that bears no equal
The blessings of a new day.
I am strength, and legacy
The reason to love and to pray.
I am voices of angels
And wisdom supreme
Calmness and clarity,
The original dream
I am black women.
I am a bloom of every color.
Skin glowing and fair
Shades of almond and chocolate.
Locked, pressed, braided and nappy hair.
I am strong shoulders
Thick bones
Muscular hips
I am sharp eyes
Curved lashes
Lips Without lies
Warm hands
Full body
The beginning of time
I am black women.
I am glowing in the darkness
And burning clear with light.
I am the flame to the cause.
The torch of insight
I am
A force to be reckoned with.
Mother Earth and her many gifts.
A captain of maids, of fairing ships.
I am
A dictionary of precision and might.
A majestic phoenix, rising full in flight.
Rejuvenation, contemplation-a supreme
aboutfACE in the night.
I am your sister
I am your mother
I am your child
Your lover
I am black women.
And I am thankful.
Thankful for your love
Thankful for your commitment
Thankful for your passion, your hugs, your warmth and your kisses.
Thankful to God
For giving you life
To mother earth
Who knows no human fear.
Because of you.
There is nothing I can’t do.
No mountain I can’t move.
I am black
I am women
I am black women.
